Let’s Talk – Stop Judging Female Book Characters

Hey lovely readers!

Today I’m going to rant a bit! As you guys know I read a lot of romance novels and I hardly ever read YA anymore. Nothing against it, I just haven’t been into it lately (post coming on why that is). But because I’ve pretty much switched genres I’ve noticed something. So many female characters in romance books get a lot of hate. And that’s what I want to talk about. So let’s get started!

I have never been one of those people that puts books, characters, or story lines into categories. Sure I classify books by genre if I need to, like for my weekly recommendations, but that’s about it. I don’t care if characters have certain personality traits, I don’t care if the story has a love triangle. If a romance book sounds interesting I’ll read it. Something I’ve noticed is a lot of people complaining about certain types of female characters in books. Most notably those that can be a bit whiny and seem to need a guy to take care of an reassure her. This is what I have to say about that: Stop! Seriously stop it right now! Allow me to explain why this behavior pisses me off.

Here’s the thing, there are millions of books out there containing female characters. And you’re not going to relate to all of them, you’re not going like all of them. But that’s completely okay. The issue I have is the judgement towards those female characters you don’t like. Lately when I’ve written reviews I’ve tried to be less judgmental for one very important reason. Because someone, somewhere does like and relate to that character you don’t like. I recently read a review of a book I recommended and that person did not like the book or the female character. And I was completely fine with that. What I didn’t like was this person’s review of the female character. They said the character was everything they hated in a girl character. They said the character seemed helpless, she relied too much on a guy. She whined too much, she should have tried harder to take care of herself, she needed a guy to tell her how amazing she was. Just so many negative things.

And this is why it upset me. It is amazing to read about strong women in books. I’m always proud to see them move past their problems and stand on their own two feet. It’s amazing when they save themselves. But you know what else I love? When they feel defeated, and broken, and lost. Because I’ve been there and it’s nice to know you’re not alone in how you feel. Sometimes I need a little confidence boost from my husband, I need his shoulder to lean on. I need to be whiny sometimes, I need to cry, I need to give up. Life is hard sometimes and sometimes it gets the better of us and that’s okay! I’m not shy with you guys about my life. I have a disability, I was bullied in school, I’ve been physically and emotionally abused. I have trust issues and daddy issues. I’m not always going to be strong. And though I realize that books are fiction they are also meant to be relate-able.

I love reading about those female characters that find themselves through love, because that actually happened to me. Sometimes you need to see yourself through someone else’s eyes to become who you were meant to be. Now I just want to say I am in no way attacking anyone. I’m not saying you should like every character you read about. All I’m trying to say is remember that just because a character doesn’t act how you think they should doesn’t mean they don’t have something to offer. I’m not going to pretend that I don’t judge characters, because I totally do. But I’m trying to change that. Again I’m not saying don’t write negative reviews or negative thoughts on writing or characters. I’m saying   lets stop the hate on those female characters that need a little help sometimes. Remember it’s okay to break down sometimes. ❤

Okay that’s all for the rant! I hope I didn’t offend anyone I’ve just been feeling a bit frustrated lately and I had to let it out! I love you guys so much and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts and perspectives on this!

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna

  1. OMG!!! Do you know how thrilled I am that you took on this topic?!?! I really thought I was alone in this.

I read a lot of romance and it just bugs me how my female brethren will be ready to give the guy, who was a jerk for half the book, redemption and hold the woman to a different standard. Unfortunately, I believe they’re just mirror-imaging real life. It’s time for us to give each other a break. We should check ourselves as we’re reading, ask ourselves are we being fair.

Thank you for tackling a really relevant topic!!!
