30312855Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.
In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.
Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.
But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.”

Okay guys it’s finally happening. I’m finally writing this review. Honestly I’ve been putting it off, because I loved this book so much I could not put it into words. Please tell me I’m not the only one that happens to! So let’s just get started!

Esta Inspiration Board-Final.pngSo basically the plot of this book is that Esta (who I’m now obsessed with by the way) has to go back in time and stop “The Magician” from destroying a book. She has to steal this book from him and in doing so essentially save magic all together. With that synopsis alone I was all over this book. I mean if you know me you know that I love history, period dramas, historical fiction, and any historical book boy (Mr. Darcy, Will, and Jem. Yes please). So the fact that this book takes place in the early 1900’s of New York, yup sign me right up. But this book is so much more than a cool sound plot and an awesome setting. It’s magical (no pun intended). The writing is vivid and descriptive. The characters are complex and deep. I found myself being able to relate to some of them despite the books high fantasy aspects. And I think that’s an amazing thing for an author to accomplish. The world that Lisa Maxwell has created is truly captivating. It’s high stakes, high emotions, and a lot of fun.

Okay now for the characters! I pretty much loved all of them. There was not one main character that I was hating on. Even when I knew who the bad guy was. I was like wow okay you’re a total jerkface, but I’m not even mad atcha! Because all of the characters are fascinating even when they’re being all bad and stuff.  But I think Mr. Harte Darrigan is my absolute favorite. Even when he was annoying me and making life difficult for Esta I was just swooning! I mean come on….

Like yes please, let me be your friend 😉 No but seriously. Harte and Esta make an awesome unlikely team and though they are technically working against each other for various reasons you can’t help but root for them. I loved hoe Esta was this bad-ass, tough girl who didn’t take any of Harte’s crap. Really I just loved every single thing about this book. I loved the messages it sent, the themes, the lessons, the story, the plot twists. Just ugh, it’s my new favorite book and I’m counting down the days until the sequel!

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
