Hey lovely readers!
Today’s post is a book review of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
“Mara Dyer believes life can’t get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed. There is.
She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love. She’s wrong.”
So obviously I came into this series pretty late, this book came out in like 2011? Needless to say this one has been on my TBR for literally years. I just couldn’t pick it up until the hype had died down, because that’s just me. So here we are, 8 years later and I’ve finally read it! I will say I really enjoyed this and despite knowing a bit about the series I was genuinely surprised by the twists and turns. Plus the fact that it’s also marketed as a romance had me hooked.
The story itself is pretty amazing. It’s like because Mara doesn’t really know what’s going on in her head, we as readers are not sure how much we can trust her. I’ve always loved the concept of an unreliable narrator and Michelle Hodkin has done that really well here. It makes the story and the characters that much more intense and interesting. To have your sanity questioned, I imagine would be an incredibly scary thing. And I often found myself sympathizing with Mara. No one is listening to her, no one is really trying to understand what she’s going through. And then we have Noah.
Now you guys know I’m all about the romance, and I was so excited to have a new book boy to love. But really he kind of annoyed me, which quite frankly shocked me to my core haha. I genuinely liked this book and I’m so happy I read it. BUT. I just wasn’t as captivated by it as I wanted to be. I think if I had read it a few years ago I would have been. But now, I’m just more selective about the YA I read and this one didn’t totally do it for me. I’ve also not been interested in sequels lately, so I think I’ll not be picking up the next one for awhile.
However I will say this. If you love YA romance, if you love a good mystery, and if you love a little magic thrown in there definitely pickup this book. Mara is absolutely captivating ❤
Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
