Book review – You by Caroline Kepnes

Hey lovely readers!

Today’s post is a book review of You by Caroline Kepnes. And OMG this book has my head spinning, so lets just get started!

you“When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card. There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.
As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.”

So umm yeah this book is just, wow. Basically Joe stalks Beck and craziness ensues. But seriously this book is both amazing an creepy. The way the book is written so that half the time it’s as if Joe is talking to you. And I think that’s what makes the book, it’s so intimate. The story is all about Joe taking control of Beck’s life. The thing that fascinated me the most about this book is how it plays with your emotions.

Given the subject matter of this book I assumed I knew how I would feel, what I would think while reading it. But the thing is there were times when I find myself feeling bad for Joe and really hating Beck. Like seriously what is that? I mean the book really puts you inside Joe’s head and that is really fascinating. Full disclosure: I firmly believe anyone who exhibits this type of behavior has a severe mental illness. And I love reading stories and watching things involving stalkers and serial killers. Don’t judge me! So yes I found this fascinating. But at the same time I was angry that I hated Beck, because obviously she’s the victim here.

Now I won’t say how it all ends, but some serious shit goes down! I really enjoyed this book. Getting inside of Joe’s head, understanding his obsession. But at the same time feeling terrified for Beck’s safety. This book was so well written and truly captivating. And honestly I love a book that pushes boundaries and forces you out of your comfort zone. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves a good thriller.

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! <3 Adrianna

  1. This sounds creepy… and intriguing. And interesting. And the thing that the author can, in some way, make you hate the victim is quite peculiar. I’ve added it to my wish-list right now! 🙂
