Let’s Talk – I’m a librarian. What’s that mean?

Hey lovely readers!

So if you didn’t already know I recently got my Master’s degree in library and information science. That means I’m officially a librarian! Yup I’ve accomplished my life long dream and it feels really freaking good! So I wanted to tell you guys a little bit about that.

Though I’m an official librarian now I don’t actually have a job as a librarian, because well not a lot of opportunity right now. But I will tell you what I hope to do with my library degree. I want to someday become an acquisitions librarian for an academic library. Basically I want to help decide what types of materials libraries carry. So that’s the goal I am currently working towards and I’m well on my way.

Right now I work for the library within the Wisconsin Historical Society. My official title is Serials Assistant within the acquisitions department. Basically that means I help manage the collection of over 3,000 journals the society currently subscribes to. You technically don’t need a library degree for this, but the society likes to hire assistants that have them, because we understand the work involved. And hopefully someday I’ll gain enough experience to be a librarian for acquisitions.

Here’s the thing about being a librarian. It’s not just checking out books to patrons all day. In fact in most libraries that kind of thing is done by volunteers or students if it’s a school library. There are also many different types of libraries that librarians can work for. The most common are public libraries, those with general types of books that the public has access to. The second most common are school libraries, those in elementary, middle, and high schools. To be a school librarian you usually need a teaching degree. The third most common are university libraries, those on college campuses. These are the type that I have always worked in and I hope to continue to do so. And then there are others that are more focused. Some examples are law libraries, medical libraries, research libraries, etc. Librarians do not get to read books all day, we do not get to talk about books all day, and we don’t re-shelve books all day. Contrary to what TV shows and movies might portray.

It’s a really amazing, interesting, and multi-faceted job. We collect, store, interpret, and share knowledge with people. We are so much more than the keepers of the books. And there is so much more to being a librarian than just having a love and respect for books. You have to very organized, patient, innovative, and enjoy interacting with all kinds of people. My ultimate goal as a librarian is to help make libraries more accessible. I want all libraries to have materials for the blind and deaf. I want libraries to cater to everyone and I hope to help that along in some way during my career. So that’s it! That’s my life as a librarian right now! Now I just want to say one more thing to you all. If you have a dream, something that you’ve always wanted to do or be, go out and do it. Go out and achieve your dream, because you can. I did and it feels so good. And even if I never accomplish my overall goal, I can say that I accomplished something I’ve been dreaming about since I was a little girl: being a librarian <3 More posts on this to come soon! I hope you enjoyed this one!

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! <3 Adrianna
