Hey lovely readers!
Here it is, my next recommendation Wednesday post! My top 5 favorite angsty romances! Just a quick explanation of what I qualify as angsty romances. For me that means New Adult romances that are a bit dark, and harsh, and real. These are not novels with small arguments and some time part from each other. Rather the characters have to work their butts off to make their relationship work. But when they do find each other it is all the more satisfying. A note about these books, some contain descriptions of abuse and rape.
Lucas (Preston Brothers #1) by Jay McLean
“In a sprint, every millisecond counts.
When you’re waiting for love, those milliseconds can feel like eons.
High school senior Lucas Preston has it all: star of the track team, a scholarship waiting for him, an apartment to himself and a revolving door of girlfriends. He also has an older sister, five younger brothers and a father who relies on him to make sure those brothers don’t kill each other.
His saving grace? Lois “Laney” Sanders, a girl he started to fall in like with when he was just eleven. A girl who became his best friend, his confidant, his courage.
It took only sixteen clicks and eight seconds for Lucas to realize that his like for Laney had turned into love. Eight life-changing seconds. It’s also the exact length of time it took to lose her.”
You guys know how much I love Jay McLean! So I had to include this one. I absolutely love Lucas and Laney’s relationship. And Lucas is probably one of my favorite book boys ever written and watching him grow as a person in this book is so satisfying. My heart aches for Laney, but the strength she shows after what happens to her is remarkable. The characters are in their last year of high school. But what I loved about them both is the maturity they display in the face of all their hardships.
Treacherous (Carter Kids #1) by Chloe Walsh
I wanted to go home. Moving to America wouldn’t have been so bad if it weren’t for the family next door. Because of my so-called guardian – and I used that term lightly – we were the latest family to take up residency in Thirteenth Street, and I was the sole target of the bitch over the fence. But, for me, life was about to get a lot worse.
Noah Messina, Ellie’s step-brother, had decided to join her torment-the-new-girl-until-she-cracks mission. There had been a fight in their driveway last weekend – between Noah and some other tattooed douchebag – that had progressed into our yard, resulting in the windshield of my car being smashed when Noah pummeled his opponent through it. Thinking back now I had to admit that I sort of overreacted when I stalked outside in nothing but a Coldplay t-shirt and a black thong and tossed an entire can of white gloss paint over the hood of Noah’s black Lexus in retaliation. I guess it had felt damn good to fight back instead of letting them walk all over me… Destroying Noah’s car with paint was like waving a red rag in front of a bull. He lost it. Right there in my driveway, with his t-shirt ripped from his body and blood dripping from his eyebrow, Noah Messina had thrown the biggest man-tantrum I’d ever seen before declaring war on me…
I was going to lose my shit over the girl-next-door. God, three months of having her live next door to me and I still felt like slamming my head into the garden wall – now worse than ever since she had challenged me. The defiance in her eyes as she stared at me down before bending over the hood of my baby and emptying the can of paint was something that struck a chord inside of me. I’d never been so angry or turned on in my life. Pure rage had flooded my veins, driven on even further when Teagan taunted me with her potty mouth and yeah, I’d kind of lost it with her. Problem was I had an even uglier temper, and Friday night Teagan Connolly ignited it like no one had before. When she slapped me and pressed her tight little body against mine, taunting me with that sharp tongue of hers, I’d never been so close to putting my hands on a woman in my life. Except instead of hurting her, I wanted to toss her sexy little ass on the hood of my car and take her right there, not caring who saw us. The urge to be inside her was like nothing I’d ever felt in my life…”
If you know me you know how much I freaking love Chloe Walsh. Not only is she an amazing author, but an amazing person. She is the queen of angst! So while I’ve only included the first book in the Carter Kids series I love all of her books. And all of her books are filled with angst! So you should definitely read all her books. But this series is by far my favorite. Noah and Teagan’s story spans a lot of time. We see them in high school and in their mid twenties throughout the series. Their relationship is just hilarious and fun and passionate. These books just suck you in!
Driven (Driven #1) by K. Bromberg
“Rylee Thomas is used to being in control. But she’s about to meet the one man
that just might make her enjoy losing it…
I am the exception to the rule.
In a world full of willing women, I’m a challenge to the roguish and achingly handsome Colton Donavan. A man used to getting exactly what he wants in all aspects of life. He’s the reckless bad boy constantly skating that razor thin edge toward out of control, on and off of the track. Colton crashes into my life like a tornado: sapping my control, testing my vulnerabilities beyond their limits, and unintentionally penetrating the protective wall around my healing heart. Tearing apart the world I rebuilt so carefully with structure, predictability, and discipline. I can’t give him what he wants and he can’t give me what I need. But after a glimpse beneath his refined exterior into the dark secrets of his damaged soul, can I bring myself to walk away? Our sexual chemistry is undeniable. Our individual need for complete control is irrefutable. But when our worlds collide, is the chemistry enough to bring us together or will our untold secrets and battle of wills force us apart?”
This book is such a great introduction to this series. And I love that it revolves around a race car driver. You don’t get that in a lot of books and it is so much fun to read about. Colton’s story is just so heartbreaking and Rylee’s just as much. The way these two help each other heal their broken souls is jut amazing. The chemistry in this book is off the charts and I absolutely love it!
Before We Fall (Beautifully Broken #3) by Courtney Cole
“Sometimes, one dark moment is all it takes to turn your world black…
For 24-year old Dominic Kinkaide, that moment took place on the night of his high school graduation. One dark incident changed him forever. He’s a hardened actor now, famous in the eyes of the world, but tortured in his own. He doesn’t care about much of anything, except for losing himself in the roles that he plays.
23-year old Jacey Vincent doesn’t realize how much her father’s indifference has affected her. She is proof that sometimes it isn’t one specific moment that wrecks a person, but rather it’s an absence of moments. She’s like a bird with a broken wing-strong yet fragile, as she tries to float through life, finding acceptance in the arms of random guys, one after the other… to fill the void that her father left in her.
Until she meets Dominic. After jaded Dominic and strong-willed Jacey are thrown together, his secret and her issues create a dark and damaged energy that will soon turn their attraction to each other into an explosive storm. Even though when the clouds have cleared and the dust has settled, both of them are almost obliterated… they’ve learned a priceless lesson. Sometimes, before we fall… we fly.”
So this one’s actually book three of this series, but you don’t need to read the first two to read this one. And it is the best of the series in my opinion 😉 These two are kind of forced to interact and that’s always fun. They don’t much like each other at first, but of course the attraction grows. I really like the movie star aspect of this book and getting a glimpse of Dominic’s rock star brothers. What happened to Dom in his youth really helps you understand why he acts the way he does. And it is so beautiful watching Jacey fall for the broken man.
Fallen Too Far (Rosemary Beach #1) by Abbi Glines
“To want what you’re not supposed to have… She is only nineteen. She is his new stepfather’s daughter. She is still naïve and innocent due to spending the last three years taking care of her sick mother. But for twenty-four year old Rush Finlay, she is the only thing that has ever been off limits. His famous father’s guilt money, his mother’s desperation to win his love, and his charm are the three reasons he has never been told no.
Blaire Wynn left her small farmhouse in Alabama, after her mother passed away, to move in with her father and his new wife in their sprawling beach house along the Florida gulf coast. She isn’t prepared for the lifestyle change and she knows she’ll never fit into this world. Then there is her sexy stepbrother who her father leaves her with for the summer while he runs off to Paris with his wife. Rush is as spoiled as he is gorgeous. He is also getting under her skin. She knows he is anything but good for her and that he’ll never be faithful to anyone. He is jaded and has secrets Blaire knows she may never uncover but even knowing all of that… Blaire just may have fallen too far.”
I love the whole Rosemary Beach but since this is the first book in the series, it has to be my favorite. Rush and Blair are just so fun to read about, even though they both have their issues. I love watching their relationship change over time and I really like seeing characters in the background get their own stories told throughout the rest of the series. The perfect summertime read!
That’s it guys. My five favorite angsty romances!
