Hey lovely readers!
A little discussion post for you today. Inspired by Bree from Perpetual Fangirl definitely go check out her blog. She’s truly the best!
So let’s talk! Here’s why you should write negative book reviews!
It can be difficult to put your negative reviews out there, especially because it is so common to share those reviews on Twitter. And Twitter is a place where you open yourself up to criticism from readers, bloggers, and authors alike. And I know for myself I have a hard time putting out negative reviews of ARC’s. An author is giving me the privilege of reading their book before the public does and I don’t like it? It makes me feel so bad. But here’s the thing. You are not going to like every book that you read, you are not going to like every book by a certain author, and some books you won’t even be able to finish. And that is okay. I promise you it’s okay.
Book bloggers do not get paid for what we do, we do it because we love books and authors and we want to help them succeed. But we also need to remember to put ourselves first sometimes and I think that negative reviews help do that. I don’t know about you other bloggers, but ranting about a book is so cathartic. Sometimes it is more so than a positive review. I started blogging as an outlet for all my passionate feelings about some of my favorite books but also to let out my frustrations about books I really did not like. And I’m guessing most of you did as well. Negative reviews are not mean. Negative reviews are not uncalled for. Negative reviews are not going to make authors hate you. And negative reviews won’t ruin your blog.
Negative reviews are allowed to be written. Negative reviews are honest. And negative reviews will be some of the best things you ever write. So please write that negative review, be honest, be you. Don’t apologize for your words. Don’t be afraid to express yourself, because if you can’t express yourself then really what’s the point? It’s hard, I know it is. But here’s what I try to remember: there is no perfect book. And some books are truly not good. Some books take things too far. Some books should be avoided because of the triggers they can set off, the feelings they evoke, or the hate they spew. And your negative review may save someone from having to experience that pain or trauma that certain things can elicit. Negative reviews have saved me on more than one occasion. I promise someone, somewhere will like what you’ve said and applaud you for it. Someone, somewhere will be grateful for your words.
So you should write that negative review. Do it for yourself, do it for your readers, do it for your fellow bloggers, and maybe even for the author. Be courteous, be kind, but above all be honest.
Love to you all, readers, bloggers, and authors alike. Never be afraid to share your words.
Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
