Book Review – Midnight Blue by L.J. Shen

Hey lovely readers!

Today’s post is going to be a book review of Midnight Blue by L.J. Shen.

“It should have been easy. I needed the money. He needed a babysitter to keep him from snorting himself to death. I was cherry-picked especially for him. Responsible. Optimistic. Warm. Innocent. The worst part is that I should have known better. Alex Winslow. British rock star. Serial heart breaker. Casanova with whiskey eyes.“Don’t get near the devil in a leather jacket. He’ll chew you up and spit you out.”Guess what? I didn’t listen. I signed the contract. World tour. Three months. Four Continents. One hundred shows. My name is Indigo Bellamy, and I sold my soul to a tattooed god. Problem was, my soul wasn’t enough for Alex Winslow. He ended up taking my body, too. Then he took my heart. Then he took my all.” – Goodreads

So seriously where to start with this one? Because really all I can think to say is I freaking love Alex! But I know that’s not all you came here for 😉 so I will try to articulate my thoughts! Let me start by saying that I was a little skeptical when I picked up this book, because I had only ever read one other L. J. Shen book so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would this be a typical romance story? Bad boy falls in love with good girl instantly, changes for the better? Ummm no, not this book.

Alex makes it no secret that he wants nothing to do with Indigo and I really don’t blame him. She’s there to babysit him and what grown man wants that? Even if she’s just trying to keep him from relapsing. That’s the first thing that struck me about this book, it is not instant attraction or love. I feel like in so many romances the tough guys is instantly attracted to this good girl who wants nothing to do with him. But that is so unrealistic. Alex though, he readily admits that Indigo is not attractive to him and he has zero interest in her. It is only when he begins getting to know her that he picks up on her beauty and that to me is the most realistic thing in the world. I 100% believe that falling in love with someone makes you see them more clearly, the beauty without as well as within.

For Indigo it’s not quite the same. She knows Alex is bad news and she falls for him anyway. I think that’s pretty standard in books of this genre, but I think L.J. handles this in a really unique way. Indigo took this jobs solely to help her family, so she stays no matter how Alex acts towards her. And eventually she lets herself be with him. But what I love is that she does so knowing it won’t last. All she knows is she deserves this, some fun with a beautiful man. And I think there is something so raw, truthful, and powerful in that decision. She’s putting herself first for once.

I absolutely loved the relationship in this book, because neither character changes who they are for the other. Instead they remain true to themselves while learning how to be together. I love how real that is. Indigo never backs down from who she is and Alex learns to love her for it. And Alex does not get better simply to win Indigo over, sure she’s a factor, but ultimately he does it to better himself because he wants to live a good life. Sure this book is about a girl falling for a rock star, but it’s also about learning how to love and support someone without giving up the most important parts of yourself. And that to me is what makes this book one of the most honest I’ve read in awhile. (And the amazing sexy times don’t hurt either!)

P.S. – I’ve decided to start including music I listen to while writing posts. I had Unstoppable by The Score on repeat for this one! Enjoy 😉

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
