Hey lovely readers!
Okay today’s post is another list of sorts. Books from my childhood, meaning some of the books, series, or authors who had a major impact on my love for reading! This is in no way an exhaustive list, because that could go on forever! These are just a collection of some of the biggest influences for me. I am way excited!!! So lets get started.
First on my list is The Royal Diaries Series and the Dear America Series both published my Scholastic and written by several different authors. These were historical fiction novels written for young teens girls. Each book focused on one historical female and her life as a young woman. The first one I ever read was the story of Marie Antoinette and BOOM my I wanted to know more. These books sparked my interest in History and thus put me on my current career path. I still own a few of these books today and I will be forever indebted to them.
The next series is The Clique by Lisi Harrison. These books are about 5 pre-teen girls and their friendship. Two of the girls are forced together by circumstance and of course they hate each other. But over time form a friendship of course. Really they are sort of coming of age books. There boys and school and shopping. They’re just really fun books and they sparked my love for long series and teen romance. I still have every book! (Like 15 or so!)
Next is Shel Silverstein, the man who inspired my love for poetry! If you haven’t read his books let me suggest his most famous: A Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Falling Up. They’re most definitely written for children, but I find them fun to read even now. They are quirky, silly, mostly nonsensical poems with really simply yet wonderful illustrations. I would venture to say that almost all of the poems contain some kind of lesson or advice. I used to read them with my little sisters and we would often try to figure out what each poem was trying to teach us. Our favorite was and is “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out” which is in Where the Sidewalk Ends. Basically it’s a story about what would happen if a kid never took out the garbage like she was asked to. Spoiler: the whole house overflows with garbage!
Of course I have to include Harry Potter on this list. For me these are books that actually changed my life. I mean I could go on and on forever about why I love them. But I’m thinking maybe I’ll do a separate post for that 🙂 So I’ll just say that these books are magical (pun totally intended) and if by some miracle you haven’t read them ummm of course you should! They have adventure, intrigue, love, friendship, evil villains, and bad ass females. I reread them every chance I get.
The last one on the list is Look for Me by Moonlight by Mary Downing Hahn
So this book, I think I actually stole it from my older sister at some point! Which means I was probably reading it way before I should have been, but oh well! 🙂 It was published in 1995, so I was three. And I think I first read it when I was about 13. I’m trying to think about what age group this book was written for, and I honestly can’t decide. Though if I had to choose I would say YA. But anyway…It’s a story about a 16 year old girl who falls in love with an older man who turns out to be a vampire *gasp!* Height of drama at 13 hahaha! Long story short: vampire is evil and wants to kill her, chaos ensues.
But the reason this book is on this list is because it was my first dive into YA, though I didn’t even know it. But it sparked a love for this genre that has only grown over the years. It is not the most well written book and the plot is a little predictable, but it stuck with me. This fantasy aspect with a little bit of danger and romance mixed in. The heroine who tries to save everyone and the boy/man who holds her heart. It’s a plot that has been recycled over and over, but someone never fails to capture my attention. And so this book will forever be special to me for being the first YA to speak to my book loving soul <3
And that’s my list! I hope you enjoyed reading this one guys and I hope you consider reading some of these.
Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! <3 Adrianna
